Coaching consultant, Dr Adrienne Green, who has actively led our Headteacher nurture group session over the last couple of years, together with Sam Halliwell Headteacher at Chorlton CE, would like to facilitate a session for headteachers.

We would like to stop for a brief moment to reflect on our own health and wellbeing an area that everyone knows is vital, yet can often be overlooked; or left to be handled on a case-by-case basis in the busyness of running a school.

Dr Adrienne Green will contribute some thoughts, however it is really for participants to inform and support each other; this is not a training session, more a space of support.

This session will take place on line via ZOOM call.

What you will learn

They would like to take the time to ask headteachers to:

  • Reflect on your own mental health on returning to school - how were you at the beginning and how are you now? It can be helpful in itself  to talk this through, and further, perhaps to discover that you are not alone in your thoughts or feelings.
  • Share strategies you have used and actions you have taken to maintain a level of mental well-being for yourself. Again, talking about this can be reinforcing in itself, and you may also hear about some practices that you hadn't considered.
  • Reflect on any psychological or emotional issues that have arisen among staff - what have you yourself noticed, and what have staff told you about their experience of returning to school, or of staying at home while colleagues go back? Talking about this may alert you to issues to bear in mind that you might not have encountered or anticipated.
  • Discuss the mechanisms or interventions you currently have in place to facilitate the mental well-being of your staff - what plans or preparations could you make to support the mental health of your staff going forward? Mental health is going to be a crucial issue over the rest of the current school year and the next. It will be clarifying to voice your thoughts on this, and may be helpful to hear those of other headteachers as you formulate your ideas.
